Pyrethrins and rotenone have potential for development as termite control agents

Researchers at the Chengdu Termite Control Research Center and other units compared the toxicity of four biological pesticides, including matrine 10% OL,  rotenone 40%DP, pyrethrin 50% OL, and keratin 98%DP, to termite .


The results showed that in the contact treatment group with 50% pyrethrin OL 250 mg / L and above, all termites died on the third day of the test; the average termite mortality in the gastrotoxic treatment group was less than 90%. The average termite mortality of the 40% rotenone DP at 500 mg / L and above in the contact treatment group was greater than 95% on the third day; the average termite mortality in the gastrotoxic treatment group was less than 30%. The maximum average lethal rates of 10% matrine OL and 98% cuscotonin DP against termite contact and stomach poisoning were (1.33 ± 0.67)%, (3.33 ± 0.67)%, and (21.33 ± 2.91)%, (4.00 ± 1.15)%. The four kinds of plant-derived pesticides have 50% pyrethrin OL > 40% rotenone DP > 10% matrine DP > 10% matrine OL > 98% osmanthrin DP in descending order of termite toxicity to the sharp-lip termite; Sorted from large to small: 50% pyrethrin OL> 40% rotenone DP> 98% cusatrin DP ≥10% matrine OL.


In summary, pyrethrin has good contact and stomach poisoning effects on termite stalk termites, and has the potential to be developed as termite killer and stomach poison; rotenone has good contact killing effects on termite stalk termites, and has developmental potential for using as termite contact killing agent .


As of now, China has approved the registration of pesticides to control termites including imidacloprid, bifenthrin, fenvalerate, permethrin, fenvalerate, cypermethrin (including cis-cypermethrin), chlorpyrifos, fipronil, pyracron, Fluoxuron, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, sulfuryl fluoride, etc. have not yet been approved for registration of biological pesticides.

1. It has strong specificity and rapid insecticidal effect; it has a strong killing effect on insects, especially aphids, thrips, and jumping beetle, and has a strong contact and stomach toxicity against larvae such as cabbage butterfly larva and diamondback moth.

2. Long lasting period; rotenone's insecticidal lasting period is long, about 10 days.

3. It is easy to decompose when it is seen by light, and there is very little residue; the medicinal solution on the surface of the leaf is easy to decompose when it is seen, it will not pollute the environment, and the application interval is 3 days.

4. Safe for the environment, people and animals. In addition to being harmful to aquatic animals, rotenone is safe for humans and livestock and will not pollute the environment.

Control objects: aphids, yellow stripe beetle, thrips, yellow melons, ape leaf worms, cabbage worms, etc.


To control fruit tree aphids, leafhoppers and other pests, spray 32.5 pyrethrum EC 22.5-37.5 g / ha (active ingredient) in water. You can also use 1 kg of pyrethrum powder (dried flower crushed), 0.6 to 0.8 kg of neutral soap, 400 to 600 liters of water and spray. Method: Dissolve the soap with a small amount of hot water, add pyrethrum powder, and then add enough water. Stir well before use. It can control a variety of pests such as aphids, leaf beetles and stink bugs.
